Ever since I was young, I have been fascinated by the mesmerizing views of Zion National Park, the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, and other majestic places. And if you have a similar itch to scratch. Here are the 10 basic essential items to pack!

Summer is here, I firmly believe time off to enjoy nature is a true human right. I have come to understand western work culture as deteriorative to the average worker who feels compelled to work harder for little to no gain.

If you are reading this to prepare for your next trip, please remember to soak up every moment possible. If the weather is nice and hot, remember to feel the cool grip of the wind. If you are trekking through the mountains or cool misty forests in the northwest, take a moment to appreciate the differences in foliage within the dense overgrowth.

Enhance your life experiences with the flora. The green trees, clear running water, colorful flowers, and THAT breathe of fresh air you can’t get in the city.

With just these ten basic essentials to carry, you will be ready, soooo let's go!

  1. Sturdy and light backpack, skip the expensive or on-trend bag to carry your things around, this Eddie Bauer Stowaway backpack ($15.00), easy to dry, sturdy, and can be folded and packed into pocket.

  2. Swiss army knife, simple, reliable, and easy to carry but it will save your life. This swiss knife that you can find in a souvenir store anywhere you go can be used in different ways. A small scissor, a knife, a can opener, plus protection for self-defense.

  3. Reusable Water bottle, we know that water bottle keeps us hydrated while we enjoy a long walk, living in the moment, and refreshed. However, plastic bottles are bad for the environment so why not invest in a nice personal bottle you can use on the go!

  4. Personal hygiene, includes extra shirts, socks, toiletries (also pads for females), wipes, and a basic first aid kit.

  5. Portable flash light, you don't have to buy something like military, or heavy-duty items, a simple pen with a flashlight would work. You can use it to write or light your way in the darkness.

  6. Food, of course! We don’t forget about the food now. Carry goods as long as you don't forget your swiss knife to open, trails mix, nuts, dried foods, crackers, or bread, it is light to carry and can fill you up quickly.

  7. Cash money, wherever you go, you can always use paper money. Unlike credit cards, money is accepted anywhere in the US, if a store or an individual does not have a credit card reader if it is accessible to pay. Don't forget to put that money in your belt bag for safety purposes.

  8. ID anywhere you go it is better to carry any identification with you. A passport card or driver's license is accepted to use to fly if you are flying around the US and it is lighter and can get wet just in case you dropped it in the river or in the rain.

  9. Navigation, includes a phone, paper maps, compass, or GPS. These essentials are very important. To know the state or city you are in.

10. Extra walking shoes or sandals. Prepare yourself for the climate and differences in terrain you expect to encounter. Why not pack for the occasion? Wearing comfortable shoes makes your journey more enjoyable and safe.
